THE IMPACT OF COVID-19

What is the Impact of Covid-19 ?

Like most countries in the world, São Tomé has been widely impacted by the sanitary crisis and it is evaluated that more than 35% of the local economy has been lost, mainly in the tourism and private sectors.

Hotels, restaurants, bars, small and medium sized businesses had their activity shut down for more than 3 months, and most people estimate that it will take about 18 months to get back to the pre-covid economic situation.

More than ever, the weakest feel the strongest impact and the people relying on day-to-day unofficial businesses have been almost prevented from earning anything.

At the beginning of the containment time, CACAE Association offered Basic Packs for the families of the children beneficiaries (dry food, oil, rice, soap, detergent..). The children also participated in a social program, consisting of helping families create a vegetable garden in their yard.
Schools have been shut since April 2020 and they shall re-open in September.

International borders have reopened but the flights will depend on the connecting airlines (TAP, TAAG, Afrijet).
The government and other institutions are distributing food bags to the most impoverished population.

The future is still quite uncertain, and this is the reason why we are now asking you to join and support our program.
